I love rawhide. Or did.
One tweet about it on Twitter led to a bunch of my anipals telling me that rawhide is not good for doggehs because the rawhide business – in fact the pet food industry in general – is so poorly regulated.
Rawhide is a by-product of the shoe industry. In some Asian countries it’s treated with formaldehyde and even arsenic.
This post gives a simple explanation of the problem.
So my person got a bit worried. I love rawhide. It gives me an alternative to furniture which makes my person happy.
Then we heard about Bully Sticks.
Basically they are bull penises. They are protein-rich and fat free.
My person headed for a store called It’s Raining Cats and Dogs which specialises in holistic pet stuffs.
The Bully Sticks sold by these peoples are from free range, grass fed bulls.
My person threw out my rawhide stash and stocked me up with Bully Sticks.
I have to say I haven’t noticed a difference. I chomp away on them just like I did with rawhide. My person has to make sure I don’t chomp too much cos I get an upset tummy so she just takes it away after a while and gives it back to me the next day.
If you give your doggeh rawhide, please stop. Some pet stores won’t even stock rawhide because of its potentially toxic qualities. Many do but that doesn’t make it ok.
I would love all my doggeh pals to switch to Bully Sticks or something safer.
Didn't know that about rawhide, will keep a look out for bully sticks, although not sure I like the thought of my dog munching away on a bulls penis. They like pigs ears, may stick with those ;o)
My Mommy has never fed me rawhide. She says it is bad for me. My vet told her that Pigs’ ears and rawhide are NOT recommended as I could choke on them. I’m glad your mommy stopped feeding it to you.
